RACE TO COLLECT
USED RUNNING SHOES
Attention runners: save your old
soles.
The
Manchester Road Race Committee announced today that it is partnering with Manchester’s World-Wide Lighthouse Missions, Inc. in an effort to collect and
recycle used running shoes.
Runners and
spectators are being urged to donate their used running shoes.Collection points will be set up at various
Manchester Road Race events during November.Slightly used the running shoes will be donated to the needy, and older
ones will be recycled.
It’s part of
the race’s effort to “go green” and to benefit the community,” said Jim
Balcome, Race Director of the MRR.“We’re hoping that our runners and spectators
will respond by donating their used running shoes, instead of discarding them.”
The 73rd Manchester Road
Race will be held on Thanksgiving Day (November 26,
2009)
at 10 a.m. on Main Street in Manchester.On race day, collection sites for the used footwear will be set up in Manchester near Carter’s
Chevrolet on the corner of Main and Charter
Oak Streets, and by the Fox 61
Television broadcast stand at the corner of Main
and Myrtle Streets.
Balcome said
that the used running shoes will be collected prior to the race at the Sports
and Fitness Expo that will be held by the Manchester Road Race Committee on
Saturday, November 21st,
from 8:30-11 a.m at the Cone
Gymnasium of Bennett Academy, 1151 Main Street,
in Manchester.Shoes can also be dropped off at the walk-in
registration sessions for the race which will be held on the evenings of
November 23, 24 and 25 from 6-9 p.m. at the Cone
Gymnasium of Bennett Academy.At Manchester Community College, students hope to fill
a tent that will be set up on campus with used running shoes, Balcome said.
